Our StoryAudra and George Sichler founded the Police K9 Foundation in 2003. Audra Sichler is an avid dog lover and also owns and operates a Doody Calls Pooper Scooper Service franchise. George Sichler is a decorated New York City Police Detective and avid dog lover as well. The two had done charitable work for dog-related charities such as Guiding Eyes For the Blind and East Coast Assistance Dogs and decided to form a charity that was close to their passions and professions: dogs and law enforcement. As they were setting up The Police K9 Foundation, they lost their son, Jake, whose nursery theme was puppies. Many friends and family members asked repeatedly what they could do for the grieving parents. After many months, Audra and George decided to continue with the formation of the charity and to have it founded in the memory of their son. All of the initial donations to the charity were sent in memory of Jake. The first K9 vest was donated to K9 Lola of the Westport, Connecticut Police Department in early 2004. |
Since 2000, over 500 U.S. police dogs have lost their lives in the line of duty. |
